Definition: What Is Art?

Directions

Not everyone defines "art" the same way. We all have our own standard of what is good art and what is not. The government has set up a fund called the "National Endowment for the Arts." What gets funding and what doesn't depends on the definition of "true art" used by the people in charge of allocating those funds.

Pretend you are on this allocation commitee. The following artists are applying for government grants. Categorize these artists into two groups: "Deserving" and "Undeserving." Then, write two paragraphs as to why you've categorized them the way you did (one for each category). What is the difference between the art that's worthy of funding and the others that aren't?

Hint: No "Because I like it" one-sentence answers (not that anyone would do that, of course!). Your standards must be well-thought out and explained. You can use the artistic write-ups below the pictures to help you, but don't copy them for your answers. Instead, find the common threads between all the ones you labelled "deserving" and write about that. The same goes for the "undeserving."

The candidates you are considering for funding are displayed here: Gering Gallery

Write the answers on a word document and e-mail it to me as an attachment entitled [Last name]: Art
