MySpace Group Individual Work

For the last week, I did much individual work for this product.  I was in-charge of editing and proof reading the final copy of the white paper.  I also added to some sections like the intro, business summary and conclusion.  I made sure our headings and subheadings were consistent throughout the paper and that each picture and graphic would be clearly printed.  I also created many slides for our power point presentation.  After our final group meeting, I took the white paper to be printed and bound.  I also worked individually to perfect my part of the presentation.

Last week, we began finalizing our MySpace document and thoroughly thought about our presentation.  I edited and proof-read my portion of the white paper about Perverted-Justice.  I also put the other parts of the white paper together.  I began to find material and new, exciting points to include in my portion of the presentation.

For the white paper assignment, I did even more investigating and research into MySpace's problems with child predators.  My group made a final decision on our three solution proposals to MySpace.  I will primarily work on our idea to form a partnership with Myspace and the To Catch a Predator volunteer group Perverted Justice.  Perverted Justice works to filter into chat rooms and social networking sites to find pedophiles seeking underage females on the internet.  By creating a partnership between Perverted Justice and MySpace, volunteers will more easily be able to spot suspect users and a sense of paranoia will be instilled in criminals using MySpace.  I've started to form this research into my white paper section.  In addition, I've looked into Youtube videos and demonstrations for us to use to enhance our in-class presentation.

Week 1 Work Blog

This week, after meeting with my MySpace group, I conducted various forms of research.  To begin, in order to obtain insider information, I joined the social networking site.  Without actually being a member of MySpace, you cannot access different portions of their website.  As a team, we decided it was imperative that one of us actually join the site to learn more about what it's all about.  Another important topic I researched was children's protection groups and agencies attempting to change the way America's youth uses the Internet.  I stumbled across an internet-based group galled Enough is Enough.  Their mission is to protect America's children and families from the dangers of using the Internet.  They first formed in 1994 and have since used a wide array of media and public relations outlets to get their message out.  We decided to use Enough is Enough as our target audience for the White Paper Project because although they are aware of MySpace, it is not a focal point of their work.  We believe with the help of this group, we could get our MySpace message out to the masses.  Finally, we worked on our Proposal Memo.  After each team member added their section, I put the final finishing touches on the assignment and proof-read it one last time.

Topic Proposal: MySpace Online Predators

With more than 50 million users, MySpace is one of the fastest growing and most popular websites in the United States.  However, recently the social networking site has made headlines after several sex crimes were connected back to it.  At first glance, the website seems innocent and fun; a myriad of users post pictures, blog and chat about everything from sports to current events.  Yet, it’s not all fun and games.  Last year alone, The Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported more than 2,600 incidents of adults using the Internet to entice children.  To make matters worse, authorities say most parents are clueless about their kids' MySpace profiles.  What can parents do to protect their children from sexual predators on MySpace and should the government intervene in protecting our country’s youth?
