Starcraft Documentation Individual Blog 4

This week I fine tuned our documentation and started working on finding a program to capture movies from StarCraft.  We're planning on capturing just a simple video of the steps being followed.  In the next few days I'm panning to capture the video.  I also helped write the appendix on the usability testing during our group meeting.

I finished writing the rough draft for the Starcraft documenation project.  I've been workign with Liz to revise it.  I've had to play through several more times to revise strategies and continue taking more screenshots.  I think the final version of the documentation gives users a fair chance of surviving.

I wrote most of the text for our storyboard this week and presented it in class.  I've also begun working on the documentation paper.  I've written a few introductory paragraphs covering some basic information that will be used in the documentation. We're focusing on setting up a very defensive base to hopefully allow the users to survive rushed attacks from an AI computer opponent.  We're also only covering the initial setup and will have to convinve people to stop playing then during the usability testing.

This week the group brainstormed ideas for the documentation project and eventually selected my suggestion of documenting how to construct a base in teh video game Starcraft.  I wrote the actual proposal for this topic discussing the users it would be targetted to and how it would benefit StarCraft's producer Blizzard Entertainment. Someone else wrote the Gantt chart and proof read the proposal.

Internet Censorship Individual Blog 3

Over spring break I wrote my contribution to our groups white paper. The section I wrote focused on the response of the Chinese people to an immediate restoration of free, uncensored access to the internet. I focused mostly on drawing parallels with glasnost in the USSR, and the uncontrollable cultural movement that resulted from those policies.

I've been conducting further research into the response of cultures to gradual and sudden reintroduction of freedom of the press. Recently I've been looking into the liberalization of India in the 1990s. Starting from the wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_press_in_India) I found an article that mentions some government responses to the Indian press (http://www.pucl.org/from-archives/Media/freedom-press.htm).

This entry is for the week of February 24th.  I accidentally failed to post it over the weekend.

Topic Proposal: Internet censorship and monitoring

The internet has the capability to bring free, anonymous speech to millions of people who suffer under tyrannical governments.  Yet, this potential is being neglected because governments are increasinly censoring their citizens access to the internet.  For the internet to reach its true potential, this censorship must be stopped or overcome.

Research Assistance for Professor Finley:

I work for a physics professor and write code that analyzes the gamma rays coming into the atmosphere.  I also analyze simulations from a new visible light telescope that is being constructed, the LSST.  I'm a very well respected programmer within the lab group.  Both of these have given me a strong background in scientific computing.
