White Paper Individual Project Log

I turned in the sources I was responsible for on time at the group meeting on Friday. Although it can be argued that some of these sources are somewhat dated, I would counter that the ideas and principles presented are still sound even if the specific implimentation is not In the context of this white paper, specifics as to the particular implimentation of our solutions will have to be fleshed out as pertaining to Purdue's theoretical wiki anyway. Those sources are as follows:

Abstract:  There is a lot of mystery and misconception around the Wiki concept. Many people are unaware of what a Wiki is some feel that they have never seen one and others are quite threatened by the perceived complexity of Wikis. In simple terms, a Wiki is a Web page that anyone can edit. At first glance, a Wiki based Web page is almost indistinguishable from a conventional Web page with one exception the presence of an 'edit page' button or Tab. Perhaps unsurprisingly clicking this button allows the reader of the page to become an author or contributor to the page. This paper outlines the background to Wikis, explains how to get started, as a creator, reader and contributor. It also looks at the concept of Wikis in education and explores the philosophy of Wiki (6 refs.)Inspec controlled terms:  educational computing  -  Internet  -  Web designUncontrolled terms:  Wiki concept  -  Web page  -  education computingClassification Code:   C7810C Computer-aided instruction  -  C7210N Information networks

The world according to wiki [open-source Web sites]

Abstract:  The wiki, a website that can be edited by the end user, is emerging as the new do-it-all solution to what ails the workplace. Beyond their service as a substitute for dreaded hard drive files, wikis are gaining momentum as training tools and as an open forum for the exchange of ideas among colleagues. The real bonus for workplace learning and performance professionals is the price-some wikis are free while others only require a minimal monthly hosting fee.
